… Ken’s House of Pancakes serves oxtail soup on this day! Ken’s may be more well known for their epic Oxtail Stew served everyday, but you got to try their soup served every Friday. It’s the best I’ve had in Hilo. Beefy and super rich… it’s not the traditional clear type of soup, which makes it a little different. Anise and shitake mushroom flavors are well balanced and it’s not too salty. Oxtails are huge. The portion size is really generous (barely could finish!). Well worth the $13.25.

Howzit! Lately I’ve been taking more pictures of food using my iPhone than my regular camera. While I still prefer the old way, I need to make it easier to post so I post more. Readers… are you still there? I hope you are and I hope you don’t mind some iPhone posts. It’s a sacrifice needed in order to keep blogging alive.

To test, I’m attaching a photo of one of my favorite delicacies enjoyed on a recent camping trip. Hope it works.

Freshly picked opihi. Risked my life for these but it was so worth it! Love it straight off the rocks or grilled (as seen) with some shoyu and lemon. Perfect with beer.

This is the old Nichols Public House location, now transformed to Jays Island Fresh Cuisine (or Jays Island Fresh Tapas). Although it was sad that Nichols had to leave this location, it’s nice to see a great new restaurant with focus on good food.

Shichimi Seard Scallops with Kawari sprouts and lilikoi butter sauce ($9)

Perfectly cooked sweet seared scallops with a beautiful rich buttery lilikoi sauce. The shichimi provided a nice little kick. Super ono! I just wish the scallops were a little bigger.

Eggplant Crostini with truffle oil and pecorino cheese ($6)

These were good too and the salad was very fresh.

778 Kilauea Prime Rib Sandwich – Slow roasted prime rib with crispy onion rings, Swiss cheese, house made potato and taro chips ($11)

Tender prime rib, rich au jus, great homemade chips. This tasted really fresh and I loved the onion rings too. Yum.

Closeups….

Lunch Menu (click for big version):

Dinner Menu (tapas are same as lunch):

Our waitress recommended the lobster ravioli for dinner.

Great food here. Service was very nice and fast. Ambience was really nice and simple with some cool hip jazzy music in the background. I hope this place stays here in Hilo!

Currently BYOB, no corking fee. There is a nearby wine store (Grapes) just a few stores down.

Baby Back Ribs, 5-Meat Chili, Mac Salad, Rice ($10)

Juicy juicy, tasty and slightly tangy. Great ribs! Chili was really good too — very thick and hearty with a slight kick. I need to check Donna’s Smokin BBQ Shack later. It is located in the Keaau Village Market.
