Ken’s Sumo Loco

Good morning from Ken’s House of Pancakes!

kens_coffee.jpg

Presenting the Sumo Loco (and keiki fries). This is what you call a heavy breakfast. Can you finish one?

Ken’s Sumo Loco

From the menu: 6 scoops rice, choice of spam (4), 5 oz. Lean “Home Grown” beef patty (2), or 6 oz. mahi-mahi. Gravy + 3 eggs any style.

We chose the traditional beef patties, cooked medium. If they don’t ask you how you want it cooked, let them know because otherwise, they cook it pretty well-done.

Ken’s Sumo Loco

Knowing I couldn’t finish a sumo loco by myself, I brought some help. I really don’t think Bev pulled her weight though. :P

Ken’s Sumo Loco

We tried and tried…

Ken’s Sumo Loco

… and this is about how far we got (note Bev still had some left in her smaller bowl we used to share).

Ken’s fries go so well with their loco mocos… so crisp!

Ken’s Keiki Fries

Definitely one of the best loco mocos in Hilo, whatever size you get.

94%

  • Burger: 28/30pts (excellent quality hawaii grown beef, grilled)
  • Gravy: 26/30pts
  • Egg: 20/20pts
  • Rice: 20/20pts

    James,

Your brave digging into that Sumo Moco!
Up until next month, all I can eat at Ken’s is the flame broiled Mahi Mahi with the side veggie and cottage cheese…I am still on my pre show diet…Yuck! It’s been 4 months surviving only on fish and chicken and practically no carbs..

The food channel and your food blog has become my hope and light at the end of the tunnel! LOL!

After I am done with my show in May, I am heading for Makino Chaiya and then dim sum . When I get back to Hilo my wife is taking me straight to Reuben’s which should be newly remodeled and open once again!

When you head to Jimmy’s drive one suggestion is their Ozen special. That same dinner never did change as long as I have been going there in 1983. It comes with Steak, Shrimp, Katsu, and a bunch of other stuff. The steak is kind of tough but I think it’s the memories and nostalgia that makes things ONO!

May is almost here and almost time to grind for me!!!

    Bon Apetite!
    Da Artist

Great photos. I love Ken’s House of Pancakes. My grandma guys never brought me there when I was growing up and I wish they had. Our usual rotation back in the day: Satsuki, Jimmy’s, Paramount Grill, Cafe 100, Kow’s, Osaka. This was when Waiakea Theaters and Fun Factory was the place to be (for kids 12-16) on a Saturday night!

Your blog is so comforting for this one homesick San Francisco Bay Area dweller. Thankfully, I found a place that has good lomi salmon and potato/mac salad: http://kilohanagrill.com/home2.html

    Thanks James

  3. Reid Says:

    James,

Props to you and Bev. You’ve done something I never would dreamed of trying to do!

  4. Doofus_Mainlander Says:

Thanks for the earlier tip for Ken’s. We ate a dinner there during our March ’07 trip upon your recommendation, and it fit the bill of having enough of everything to cover a range of family tastes– plenty of choices among local dishes and familiar American items. Slight downgrade for wait because of “shift change.” There were 2 sumos announced (and we knew how to react, thanks to you), and I also found out it’s a good place for a child’s birthday (sparkler-topped cake and a birthday song [not trad. "Happy Birthday]).

  5. Kirk Says:

Hey James – Looks like you guys did pretty good on that sumo loco! I’ve never been brave enough to try it myself.

    Hey James,

Been a loooong time since my last post bruddah! All I can say is “Only on da Beeg Island!” Fries with loco moco?? Good job on the sumo but I wouldn’t blame Bev, come on J you married now you gotta show fo’ it man!! If you say they’re good then I’ll try them next time I’m there.
I know you don’t get outside of Hilo too much but try check out Earl’s Snack Shop, in Paauilo, my friends do a great job there with the bento rolls.

got to agree with you on those bento roles from Earl’s. Very unique sushi with teri, smoked fish, and other ono stuff. Always a stop on our way to and back from Kona via Hamakua route.

  9. Dean Says:

James – great post, although you forgot to mention the highlight of the Sumo moco experience. When they ring the bell and the whole wait staff yells “SUMO” before they bring it to you.

Ahhh maaaaaaaan! That looks awesome… keep on keepin’ on James!

Here’s why I love reading this blog.. I live Puna but work Hakalau, and gotta bring one lunch every day. Paauilo not so far! I’m gonna try Earl’s next week now.

    Greeting from Maine!

Loved the site; it brought back some great memories! I happened upon it while searching for a Loco Moco photo to link to in my birding blog (I figured a photo reference would be required for most folks on this side of the country!) in reference to my reminiscences of my field season on the Big Island after spending the morning yesterday guiding for a gentleman from the Big Island.

    Keep up the good work,
    Derek

I heard so much about Ken’s House of Pancake. I didn’t get to try it out when I visited Hilo, last November. I’d love to try the sumo loco moco (mini version).

Clearly you have never used this app. The geo-tagging ability would have allowed the two guys to contact each other based upon the fact they were near… nothing else. This kid not only has downloaded and used an app that is above his download age, he also has created a profile and responded to incoming requests. Gullible? I think that’s arguable.I am in no way defending any form of pedophilia and I’m sorry this kid has had a bad experience but I’m also very concerned for the older man who, in this instance, could have believed he was dealing with another guy over the age of consent purely because he was using the app.Caveat Emptor indeed!
